Cheshire East Council Waste Strategy Review Consultation
Reasons for a review
The Waste Strategy has been guiding Cheshire East Council’s decisions for the past five years. It is now time to see if it remains relevant and to make sure we are focussed on the right priorities. We have made alterations and are interested in your opinion.
You can read the full strategy document here.
Since implementing the strategy, a number of the objectives have already been achieved.
What we have done
- We have ended the use of landfill disposal for over 95% of the black bin waste we collect from you. Instead we now access more sustainable facilities to generate energy from the waste in the form of heat and power.
- We have introduced a new food waste recycling scheme as part of our garden waste recycling collections, building a new Cheshire East composting plant producing peat free high-quality compost from your recycling that is used by retailers.
- By adapting the collection rounds and our working practices we now collect recycling and waste more efficiently using less vehicles through our contractor Ansa Environmental Services. Following recommendations in the strategy we have reviewed and made changes to our household waste recycling centres to deliver efficiencies while maintaining the service at the times you most use our sites.
In addition to the local changes we need to recognise that nationally there is greater awareness of the impact that waste has on the environment - the ‘Blue Planet’ effect. There is increasing understanding of climate change and how actions taken at a local level can make a difference.
Importantly, the Government has also published its Resources and Waste Strategy (2018) that will have a significant impact on how our waste is managed. It seeks to drive consistency of collections whilst giving added emphasis to careful use of materials so that recycling is easier. The new Environment Bill will see new challenging recycling targets of 65%. Together these two will shape waste management for decades to come.
